Documentary: Devil's Playground

Devil's Playground (2002)

(this review is an old one that i had at my myspace page a while back)

Rumspringa, ever heard of it? Ever run across the Amish people? Recently there was a massacre at an Amish school. The press just COULDN'T BELIEVE that any Amish elder agreeing to comment simply stated that they FORGAVE the murderer. Wow, how very Christian of them. By watching this movie, I actually now believe that the Amish are the MOST LITERAL Christians out there. I mean, what other christian sect INSISTS that their adolescents "run free" of their church beliefs so they can decide whether they are ready to "walk in the footsteps of Jesus?" Shit, that makes TOO MUCH sense! This is the time of your life when you start to question authority and religion.

Did you know that most Amish teenagers have cell phones? Even alot of Amish Elders do as well. Who knows how to party? THE AMISH DO!!!

This is a great introduction to a very secretive society. EVERY AMISH FOLLOWER has gone through Rumspringa. There's a part in this movie where the director asks the Amish what their best memories were. Watch some of the older ones, whose rumspringa was in the 60s-70s. You can see the smile appear as they remember concerts and experimenting with drugs. The most interesting thing is that after this chance to enter the REAL world, something like 90% still decide to join the church, and shun the modern world for the rest of their natural lives. Speaking of shunning, the Amish really do this!!! You don't even have to leave. You can still live with them, they just IGNORE YOUR ASS!

you've gotta see this shit!

Documentary: The God Who Wasn't There

The God Who Wasn't There (2005)

The God Who Wasn't There
is a documentary by Brian Fleming, an ex-evangelical born again christian. How does someone become an "ex" born again christian? Simple, they turn AWAY from the Bible, and look for historical evidence of the so called "messiah". You see, around the time of the so called "Christ," the Jews and Romans were VERY thorough in regards to documenting history. So any person wondering about the historical Jesus will find something they were NEVER taught in church: there isn't one. Jesus never existed, according to written history. This was a very eye opening experience for Brian, who felt it was his duty as a film maker to attempt to take the blindfold off of the "faithful."

This 1 hour film is packed with facts and interviews with REAL theologians. If you notice, most evangelical theologians aren't that at all: they are bible thumpers with "degrees" from such accredited universities like "Bob Jones University" and "The Moody Bible Institute." I don't understand how you're considered a "theologian" when the ONLY expertise you have is in the Judaeo-Christian discipline. Of course, ask these folks about all the damning evidence against their beliefs and there is one, and only one explanation needed: SATAN DID IT.

I never knew that there is ONE unforgivable sin. Rape babies? Eat people? Torture kittens? Murder innocents? Simply accept Jesus as your lord and savior and you will go to heaven. But DENY THE HOLY SPIRIT???? You will forever be damned! Don't ask Jesus for any help now sinner! You just GUARANTEED yourself a place in hell.

If you are a person who believes the provably flawed bible to be "The literal word of God," then I've got an offer for you: You see, I'm a General of the Nigerian Army. I've accrued much wealth over the years and need to transfer $10 million USD into a checking account in the USA. Please forward all of your personal information to me, including your social security number and all banking information. You will be allowed to keep ALL OF IT because I can tell how much of a great person you are by your email address.

Anyways, if you're a believer, PLEASE test your beliefs by watching these types of documentaries. If you're a non-believer, or a true spiritualist, there's nothing in this movie you haven't already discovered. The non-existence of a historical Jesus has been known for centuries. It is the money making "preachers" who don't want people to know the truth. After all, how do you make a Mercedes payment if no one is coming to church?

this was good!

Comedy: Year of the Dog

Year of the Dog (2007)

Mike White (Chuck and Buck, School of Rock, The Good Girl) makes his directorial debut with this typical Mike White storyline. It stars Molly Shannon as Peggy, a single woman in her early 40s, who is well onto the path to spinster. She lives alone, but she is not lonely. She has Pencil, an adorable little Beagle. This movie should have you in tears within the first 15 minutes. If it doesn't, you're not gonna like the rest of it.

After that tragedy, Peggy goes through some extreme lifestyle changes. John C. Reilly, Peter Saarsgard, and Laura Dern all play typical Mike White style supporting characters, making the movie even better.

Since I would put this much more into the Chuck and Buck style of White's writing, you should probably keep the kids away. It's definitely not Nacho Libre.

I really liked this movie for one certain reason: I'm a dog lover, and will probably have a pet every living moment until I'm worm food. However, people who don't particularly see animals as lovable creatures will probably not like this movie, though Shannon's fall into supposed madness may appeal to them. Don't worry, the movie ends well.
