Year of the Dog (2007)
Mike White (Chuck and Buck, School of Rock, The Good Girl) makes his directorial debut with this typical Mike White storyline. It stars Molly Shannon as Peggy, a single woman in her early 40s, who is well onto the path to spinster. She lives alone, but she is not lonely. She has Pencil, an adorable little Beagle. This movie should have you in tears within the first 15 minutes. If it doesn't, you're not gonna like the rest of it.
After that tragedy, Peggy goes through some extreme lifestyle changes. John C. Reilly, Peter Saarsgard, and Laura Dern all play typical Mike White style supporting characters, making the movie even better.
Since I would put this much more into the Chuck and Buck style of White's writing, you should probably keep the kids away. It's definitely not Nacho Libre.
I really liked this movie for one certain reason: I'm a dog lover, and will probably have a pet every living moment until I'm worm food. However, people who don't particularly see animals as lovable creatures will probably not like this movie, though Shannon's fall into supposed madness may appeal to them. Don't worry, the movie ends well.
this was good!
